Fire Code Adoption
Pursuant to authority granted by Tennessee Code Annotated, §§ 6-54-501 through 8-54-506, and for the purpose of providing a reasonable level of life safety and property protection from the hazards of fire, explosion or dangerous conditions in new and existing buildings, structures, and premises, and to provide safety to firefighters and emergency responders during emergency operations the International Fire Code, 2018 edition, as recommended by the International Code Council, is hereby adopted by reference and included as a part of this code.
The Town of Alexandria adopted the 2018 version of the International Fire Code on April 25, 2023, effective May 1st, 2023. Before this, the 2006 version was adopted.
The Fire Chief or other certified codes inspector will conduct fire inspections of commercial properties and businesses to ensure that they comply with local fire safety codes and regulations, which helps to prevent fire hazards and protect lives and property.
Another objective is to help firefighters understand the layout of buildings and the specific risks, improving response times and safety in case of emergencies. During these inspections, the property owner or occupant's emergency contact information is documented so firefighters can make contact after hours if there is a fire or other emergency.
Fire inspections aim to ensure the public's safety, not to punish business owners.
