Planning and Zoning Committee meet on the 1st Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Town Hall, as needed. To be listed on the agenda for the meeting, you must have all required information on file with the Town Recorder no later than 15 days before the meeting at 102 High Street, Alexandria.

Questions about how the Zoning Ordinance applies to your property?
Please fill out the Clarification Form below and submit it and the required information to the Town Recorder no later than 15 days prior to the next meeting to be placed on the agenda. Properties within FloodplainFederal Law - Title 44 CFR 59.2 (b) and (c) mandate that to participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and be eligible for the sale of flood insurance, a community must adopt and enforce at least the minimum floodplain development provisions in 44 CFR 60.3. In addition, Sections 60.3 (a)(1) and (b)(1) state that permits – floodplain development permits – are required for all proposed construction or development.
Development- any man-made change to improve or unimproved real estate including but not limited to mining, dredging, grading, paving, filing, excavating, drainage facilities, and storage of machinery or equipment and structures (including fences). The permit approval process may take a few months to complete. Town of Alexandria permits and (if required) FEMA approval(s) are required prior to beginning construction. |
A DEVELOPER seeking to obtain service from the UTILITY will submit to the UTILITY a preliminary plat, which shall include the number, size and estimated cost of each unit and any other information that will assist the UTILITY in making a determination of availability of service. Each plat shall show the number of units and size (single family, duplex, etc.) to be served in the development.

Residential Building Code and Permits
State Residential Building Code Enforcement Program applies to one- and two-family dwellings built in Alexandria City Limits and within DeKalb County - Permits must be purchased prior to breaking ground. The state has adopted the 2018 International Residential Code (IRC) and the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).
Fire Code
Pursuant to authority granted by Tennessee Code Annotated, §§ 6-54-501 through 8-54-506, and for the purpose of providing a reasonable level of life safety and property protection from the hazards of fire, explosion or dangerous conditions in new and existing buildings, structures, and premises, and to provide safety to fire fighters and emergency responders during emergency operations the International Fire Code, 2018 edition, as recommended by the International Code Council, is hereby adopted by reference and included as a part of this code.
Building Code
Pursuant to authority granted by Tennessee Code Annotated, §§ 6-54-501 through 6-54-506, and for the purpose of regulating the construction, alteration, repair, use, occupancy, location, maintenance, removal, and demolition of every building or structure or any appurtenance connected or attached to any building or structure, the International Building Code, 2009 edition, as prepared and adopted by the International Code Council, is hereby adopted and incorporated by reference as a part of this code, and is hereinafter referred to as the building code.
State Demolition/Renovation Requirements
Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation in compliance with Chapter 1200-03-11-.02 of the Tennessee Air Pollution Control Regulations require building owners and/or operators to thoroughly inspect buildings for asbestos-containing material (ACM) prior to demolition or renovation. The person inspecting the facility must be accredited by the state of Tennessee. The regulations also require owners and/or operators to file a notification with the state ten (10) working days prior to demolition of a building (even if no asbestos), or any renovation involving the removal of regulated ACM.
Complete form CN-1055 (Notification of Demolition and/or Asbestos Renovation) and file with the state as required.
